Site
visits undertaken by veterinary surgeons usually fall into one
of three categories: 1)
Pre-season visits to Game Bird farms and Pigeon lofts to discuss the Veterinary Health Plan for the coming
season. This discussion will take into accounts problems experienced in the
previous season and anticipated management changes for the current season. 2)
Visits to sites where health or production problems are present. The
additional information collected on a site visit can often be of great benefit
when advice on bird management is required. 3) Routine visits
to monitor any problems as
they occur and advise accordingly. Veterinary surgeons are aware that if they are not careful then they could be responsible for the spread of disease between sites. Careful planning of visits will reduce this likelihood. In addition, the use of disposable protective clothing may be necessary in some circumstances and disinfectants for boots and washable clothing should always be provided by the visiting veterinary surgeon.
