Cleaning of The Loft

Birds require a clean dry environment if disease is to be kept to a minimum.

Faeces should be removed at least every forty-eight hours to prevent a build up of worm eggs, coccidia and gut bacterial in the environment.  In cold weather it may be permissible to allow the faeces to remain up to ninety-six hours before being removed.

The regular use of a suitable disinfectant will kill viruses within the loft.

Disinfectants are only effective once physical dirt has been remove and the use of disinfectants on dirty surfaces is of no practical use.  A thorough cleaning, allowing the area to dry and then disinfection is necessary if it is to be effective.

Do not mix disinfectants and always use according to manufacturers instructions.  Mixing disinfectants can allow the release of toxic gases, which can be harmful to both the pigeon and man.
